For years, I’ve been keeping tracing paper fragments. Leftovers of making artworks with others from making children’s birthday cards, building objects and repairing things. 

I see these as the residue and most basic form of my work. 

By photocopying overlapping sheets, working on top using watercolours, collage, pen or pencils, I make studies. Some eventually graduated, becoming models for real 100%, ‘proper’, oil on canvas Paintings. 

I value the studies as being more complicated, humble and provisional. Showcasing them sympathetically to the originals, I made this book. 

Printed on tracing paper, the studies overlap and change as you turn the page. At the back is a wallet with coloured papers the reader can insert anywhere. By putting the different coloured papers between pages, you can influence the layers or colour schemes of the semi-transparent prints on tracing paper.
